A local friend took us to Régua to get a little taste of the beauty of the Douro Valley.
Régua’s defining chapter began in the 18th century. In 1756, under the visionary reforms of the Marquis of Pombal, this region was officially designated for the production of Port wine—marking it as one of the world’s first demarcated wine regions. The creation of the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro reshaped Régua’s destiny, establishing it as the administrative and operational center of the valley’s wine trade. From its riverside docks, barrels of wine made their way down to Porto, where they matured in cellars before embarking on voyages across the globe.
Over time, Régua came to embody the very spirit of the Douro Valley. Today, it is both a working town and a tourist destination..
As you can see, the area is absolutely stunning.
